Fascias & soffits · A focused guide
Can new fascia be fitted over the old boards?
Published by Big Ben Roofing Ltd
Capping retains the existing fascia beneath a new covering, so the condition of that retained board matters. Ask the installer to explain how it has been assessed and how gutter support will be maintained. Full replacement removes the old fascia and creates a different work scope. A photograph of the finished surface cannot establish whether the concealed timber was suitable to retain, so compare the preparation and inspection as well as appearance.
Name the retained components
Request a written distinction between the new outer board, existing fascia, rafter ends, soffit and guttering. Freefoam distinguishes capping from full replacement on the basis of the existing board condition. Your quotation should state which approach is proposed and why it suits the inspected roof edge. Ask what remains inaccessible until work starts and what happens if the initial assumption proves wrong.
Compare the complete change at the eaves
Two prices may differ because one retains the gutter and another removes it, or because supporting repairs are treated differently. Ask how the finished roof edge will meet the gutter and existing ventilation. If damaged material is discovered, require photographs and an agreed variation before it is hidden. Keep the preparation record alongside the final photographs rather than judging the work only by the visible finish.
Useful details to record
- Identify every board to be retained or removed.
- Ask how the existing fascia condition was established.
- Clarify supporting repairs and gutter refitting in writing.
- Retain photographs before the new covering conceals timber.
Use information already available from indoors or ground level. Do not climb onto the roof or disturb materials to complete this checklist.
Does a thicker-looking finished fascia prove full replacement?
No. The finished profile alone may not show what remains behind it. Ask for the accepted specification and preparation photographs to establish whether the old board was removed, retained or partly renewed.
Background reading
General guidance helps frame the questions. The cause, suitable materials and scope depend on inspection of the particular roof.
