Should gutter capacity be reviewed when a roof extension changes the drainage?
Published by Big Ben Roofing Ltd
When an extension changes the roof area or where water discharges, the gutter and outlet arrangement should be considered as part of that altered route. A larger-looking gutter is not a complete design decision by itself. Ask how the proposed system suits the contributing roof, outlet positions and downstream connection. Share the project drawings and existing overflow concerns so the roofing and drainage proposals can be coordinated before the new arrangement is installed.
Explain what the extension changes
Identify whether a new slope joins an existing gutter, drains onto another roof or uses a separate downpipe. Existing drawings can show the intention, while photographs explain what is currently present. State who is coordinating the wider project. The relevant contractor or designer should establish the actual roof areas and product requirements rather than relying on a homeowner estimate from the garden.
Include the downstream connection
Ask where the additional water will go after reaching the outlet and whether that route is included in the project assessment. A quotation should identify gutter profiles, outlet positions and retained or changed downpipes. If another contractor handles underground drainage, agree the interface and any unresolved question. This avoids a new upper system being priced without establishing the connection it is intended to serve.
Useful details to record
- Share the extension drawings and identify which drainage route changes.
- Mention existing overflow or leakage before the new work begins.
- Ask who selects the gutter and outlet arrangement for the roof.
- Confirm responsibility for retained downpipes and the downstream drainage connection.
Use information already available from indoors or ground level. Do not climb onto the roof or disturb materials to complete this checklist.
Can the original downpipe simply accept every new roof area?
That should be checked for the proposed arrangement. Ask how the additional roof drainage, product capacity and downstream route have been considered. An existing pipe’s presence alone does not establish its suitability for the altered system.

General guidance helps frame the questions. The cause, suitable materials and scope depend on inspection of the particular roof.
